She plays the role of an adulteress in ‘The Little Nyonya 小娘惹’ who hooked herself up with her brother-in-law Daren Lim 林明伦, eloping with the fortune of the family and indirectly causing the death of 向云 Xiang Yun.
It’s 许美珍 Cynthia Koh in yet another baddie role but you may applaud her action this time round…
According to the Executive Producer who shared with me one fine afternoon, she said she sat down with 许美珍 Cynthia before the shoot and told her how this character should jump out from the usual mould of what 许美珍 Cynthia would probably attempt like in all her past roles…
She will be the force that paid back evil when confronted by the evil system and culture of this feudalistic Nyonya’s clan. Unlike most ladies who suffered quietly and accepted their ‘fates’ as destined in those times, 许美珍 Cynthia would fight them head on in the most unorthodox manner. Like a wounded ‘prey’ making its last bite on the ‘predator’…dying but never without a bloody fight or bite…
Watch out for one scene which will increase 许美珍 Cynthia and possibly 潘玲玲 Pan Ling Ling’s chance of a shot at next year’s Star Awards Best Supporting Actress…
许美珍 Cynthia faces her elder sister 潘玲玲 whose husband she slept with. She ‘crushes’ her egoistic sister down, declaring herself the victor over her man, her fortune and her dignity… It will be in this same scene to witness 潘玲玲 Pan Ling Ling skills as a serious actress when she evolves from her usual ‘I am so on top of everything and well-loved woman’ into a totally ‘punctured’ souless lady in just a couple of minutes （会很考演技喔）.
It’s going to be a classic moment like ‘King Kong versus T-Rex’ mode of a dramatic scene…
In a surprising turn of event, 许美珍 Cynthia will be responsible for ‘empowering’ Jeanette (another lady in the family whom she admires for her resilient fighting spirit) to become the all powerful matriarch of the whole Nyonya clan…
I like the above dramatic shot with 林明伦 and 许美珍 at the staircase…the suitcase of an eloping 狗男女, the 见不得光 lustful kiss, the ‘I don’t care and let’s 爽’ look on Cynthia’s face is a true reflection of her character in the drama…brilliant!
While the 7 Princesses and your usual Ah Ge and Ah Jie stay in the limelight, there is this bunch of very fine artitses who deserve their fair share of attention. Bravo to 许美珍 Cynthia and 潘玲玲 for their enormous talent and dedication!
