President's Star Charity 2008

If the likes of 881 and 12 Lotus have turned you on to the delights of old-time cabaret, then this year’s President’s Star Charity is for you.

Promising fabulous song-and-dance routines from your favourite stars (old and new) in Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and Hindi, this year’s President’s Star Charity is “celebrating the Singapore Cabaret” in a big, big way.

Performances will mix up veteran voices like Rahimah Rahim and Veronica Young with entertainment for the young ones too from last year’s Live The Dream winners By Definition as well as some familiar Singapore Idol faces. The show will also fly in some iconic singers of yore who will most likely be remembered by your grandparents.

Hosted by Adrian Pang and Michelle Chia, the show will see our A-list MediaCorp stars shaking all they’ve got to try to get you to call in.

Together, the old and the new will try their hand at songs from the 60s. Idol alumni Mathilda D’Silva and Olinda Cho join local singer Vanessa Fernandez to make up a hot new version of 60s girl group the Supremes, while Asian Idol Hady Mirza sings classic P Ramlee songs with the original Rahimah Rahim.

Watch out, too, for a reincarnation of the Rat Pack in the form of Gurmit Singh, Tay Ping Hui and Project Superstar season 2 champ Daren Tan, who will don snazzy suits for a Frank Sinatra medley.

President S R Nathan himself will give a special performance with Singapore’s very own T’ang Quartet and Cultural Medallion recipient Tan Kian Por, who specializes in Chinese painting and calligraphy.

Singer Anneke Gronloh will also fly in from Europe to participate in the festivities. The Dutch-born singer, who moved to Indonesia with her family in 1949 was a hit in the early 60s with her songs Asmara and Dari Ketil.

One item to look out for will be ‘Made in India’, a Bollywood extravaganza with Bollywood actor Jas Arora (Achar!), as well as Vasantham personalities Ebi Shankara (you may have also seen him on The Showdown) and Murali Krishnan.
